Sundhya Pahuja researches, writes and teaches in the areas of international law, development and legal theory. Her work is concerned with the contemporary question of global inequality, and relations between North and South but understood in an historical context. It cuts across traditional divides, including public and economic international law, and jurisprudence and political economy. Her prize winning work, Decolonising International Law: Development, Economic Growth and the Politics of Universality provides a historical and theoretical account of contemporary international law and institutions, and their relation to the concept of development. Her new research continues to consider the problems of the present day, refracted through the lenses of history, theory and political economy. The work in progress on which she will draw for this workshop, is the very early stages of a project which tries to understand the relation between international law and the Company. She is interested in thinking about the rivalrous nature of the relation between the Company and the State - both corporate forms - as a contest of authority, even of authority to speak the law. Her forthcoming article, 'Laws of Encounter: A Jurisdictional Account of International Law' in the London Review of International Law, gives a flavour of the work's early theoretical orientation. At the moment, the project is bookended by critical engagements with both the Peace of Utrecht in 1713, and the current work of John Ruggie, the UN Special Representative on Business and Human Rights.

Sundhya holds Chairs in Law at both the University of Melbourne, and at SOAS, University of London, as well as Visiting Professorship at Birkbeck. She serves as Core Faculty at the Harvard Institute for Global Law and Policy Workshop, and has been invited to serve as the Director of Studies in Public International Law at the Hague Academy of International Law in 2014.
