Alternative Judicial Processes within the Kurdish Diaspora in Berlin

Latif Tas holds a Degree and Masters in Journalism from Marmara University, Istanbul. He completed a second Master’s degree in legal research at the School of Law, Queen Mary, University of London in 2009, and was awarded the grade “distinction” and the prize of best Masters research dissertation. Latif Tas completed his PhD in Law from Queen Mary in 2012. His dissertation “Kurds in the UK: Legal Pluralism and Alternative Dispute Resolution” represents a groundbreaking assessment of legal pluralism and the alternative dispute resolution practices of Kurds living in the UK. While contemporary interest has focused on so-called Shari’a councils as much contested models of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) among Muslims in Britain and elsewhere, the establishment of the Kurdish “secular” ADR system in London has been all but ignored. His research on the Kurdish community and its development of such an unofficial legal mechanism has important lessons for the general field of migration and diaspora studies.

As a Rechtskulturen Fellow Tas will expand his research and investigate more closely how the unofficial legal customs of Kurdish immigrants living in Germany operate.
