Rechtskulturen Workshop

Islamic normativity and the making of legal culture in rural contexts

Convener: Ismail Warscheid

Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Juristische Fakultät, Room E23, Unter den Linden 9, 10099 Berlin

The practice of Islamic Law in rural areas remains an under-researched field. Especially with regard to the pre-modern period, Islamic legal traditions and institutions are most often considered an essentially urban phenomenon. They are thought to have had little impact on rural contexts where different types of customary law are supposed to have regulated most forms of social interaction. Bringing together scholars from different disciplinary backgrounds, the workshop seeks to challenge this conception by exploring the different aspects of Islamic legal culture within rural societies.

Limited to 25 participants. Please register until Thursday, 22 May via email (rechtskulturen@trafo-berlin.de).
